I thought this piece by the Atlantic was a fascinating look at our world 50 years ago:

In 1962 your Grandpa Fletcher was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, South Dakota, a major Strategic Air Command base. During the Cuban Missile crisis that year, the large bombers, B-52s,were constantly taking off and landing, fully armed, in case the United States went to war with the Soviet Union. Those of us in elementary school practiced crawling under our desks in the event of nuclear attack (a lot of good that would have done). I was in 2nd and 3rd grades, Richard started 1st grade in the fall of 1962.
